School Visits: Home Edition

Hippocrates once said, "For extreme diseases, extreme methods of cure, as to restriction, are most suitable."

In other words, desperate times call for desperate measures.

One of the best parts of my job is sharing stories and music with children. I love being a part of their learning process, singing with them, and laughing with them.

I don't see why a pandemic has to take that away.

But, until we can do this again...

This will have to suffice.

So, for the 2020-2021 school year, I'm revising my pricing schedule to accommodate virtual visits. Please rest assured that I will aim to make these presentations every bit as participatory and exciting as my live visits! But all that said, I do look forward to seeing you in person when we get to the other side.

PRESENTATIONS

Involved students are inspired students! Picture book and Chicken Soup author Shannon Stocker customizes engaging, energetic, thought-provoking presentations for K-12 audiences.

With a background as a songwriter, Shannon's elementary school presentations incorporate original music with catchy, repetitive refrains, written and performed to compliment her debut picture book, CAN U SAVE THE DAY. As both a fiction and nonfiction writer, she enlightens and inspires middle schoolers about the similarities and differences between both writing styles. And as a coma survivor and med school graduate, she encourages high schoolers to embrace their passions and adapt to the unexpected. All presentations include age-appropriate power points detailing things like how a book is made, the importance of research (which they already know how to do...they just might not call it that yet!), those pesky (but necessary) revisions, and the illustration process.

These presentations can be given to children who are physically back in class, or still participating in non-traditional learning environments (aka, pandemic NTI, homeschooling, etc).  I'm happy to meet with kids wherever they may be!

PRESENTATION OPTIONS

STORYTIME SING-ALONG

Everyone loves a catchy tune! Geared toward the K-5 crowd, this high-energy presentation includes a reading of CAN U SAVE THE DAY, a discussion about the basics of picture book writing, editing, and illustrating, and a silly sing-along about stuttering, stammering animals.
Length: 50-60 minutes (including Q&A)

FICTION VS. NONFICTION

Geared toward kids in grades 5-8, this game show- styled format compares and contrasts fiction and nonfiction writing. Think picture books are just for little kids? Think again! A power point highlights the many similarities between crafting a picture book and writing a novel. This presentation can also be altered for grades 2-5.
Length: 50-60 minutes (including Q&A)

BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE

Delving into the unexpected life turns that took Shannon from medicine to children’s literature, this presentation is geared toward grades 9-12 (but can be altered for 6-8). Discussion points include the importance of doing your own research, expecting the unexpected, rolling with the punches, and seizing opportunities that you may not even know are there.
Length: 50-60 minutes (including Q&A)

Shannon would also be happy to speak at your conference, workshop, or charitable event. Contact Shannon to request a booking or for more information.
